     Hearing Loss
            Hearing is one of the most common conditions affecting                  CHAPTER  1
            older adults today and aging is one of the most common
            causes of hearing loss. While not a requirement for
            maintaining a driver license, you often rely on hearing to
            alert us to:
                ▶ Ambulances, emergency vehicles, or a horn honking
               to alert you to a potentially dangerous situation.
                ▶ Something wrong with your car.
                ▶ Help you deal with situations quickly.
            It is recommended to check your hearing every 3 years
            after age 50 as hearing loss that is identified early may be
            helped through treatment.
            Medications
            Older adults take longer to break down and eliminate
            any kind of medication, both prescriptions and over-the-
            counter drugs. Even medicines which might not have
            caused any trouble in the past can build up over time and
            affect you more strongly than before. When you are on
            multiple medications, the drugs may have adverse effects
